Covering 10,300 square kilometers, this relatively new and undisturbed park is Tanzania’s second largest and also its largest elephant sanctuary among the National Parks. It lies 130 kilometers west of Iringa. Its name is derived from the great Ruaha River, which flows along the entire eastern border creating spectacular gorges and scenery. Hippos, crocodiles, turtles and fish habitat in the river. The park is also known for its concentration of lesser and greater kudus, its roan and sable antelopes, and its such rich bird life. Photography blinds have been built at strategic places where wildlife congregates. The best moths for a game viewing are July to November.
Facilities;
The park has an airstrip for light aircrafts. There are three tented camps that operate during the dry season, May-December. The park has also one lodge, self catering huts (bandas) and two campsites. Hotels are available in Iringa town.
